Designer Spotlight: The Old-World Magic of Avlea Folk Embroidery
Meet Krista West and her "Ancient Beauty for the Modern World."
The Artist Behind the Aesthetic
This week, we are honored to feature Krista West, the creative force behind Avlea Folk Embroidery. Based in our neighboring Salem, Oregon, Krista spent over 25 years as a specialist tailor for the Greek Orthodox Church before discovering her passion for folk textiles during a sourcing trip to Greece.
Named after the Greek word for "courtyard"—the traditional place where community and creativity meet—Avlea was born from Krista's desire to rescue ancient, geometric motifs from grainy historical photos and fabric fragments and bring them into the modern home.
"I fell in love with the designs for their historicity, geometric regularity, and their unique colorways. They were unlike anything I'd ever seen." — Krista West
Why We Love Avlea
At The Artful Needleworker, we are captivated by the way Krista bridges the gap between the ancient and the accessible. We love Avlea because:
Historical Accuracy: Each design is rooted in authentic Mediterranean and Balkan traditions, preserving the soul of the original textiles.
Authentic Materials: Krista uses specialty imported fabrics (like Mikini and European Linen) to ensure your project has the same hand-feel as the heirlooms that inspired them.
Thoughtful Curation: While the designs look complex, they primarily use accessible stitches—cross stitch and backstitch—making high-end folk art achievable for everyone.
The Curator’s Choice: The "BitKit" Series
If you are new to folk embroidery, we recommend starting with an Avlea BitKit. These small, beginner-friendly kits (like the popular Little Leaves or Kalamata Courtyard) come with everything you need and are the perfect "weekend project" to brighten your space.
The Perfect Pairing: For the crispest lines on these geometric motifs, pair your Avlea kit with our Artful Needleworker Beechwood Hoop and Precision Gold Stork Scissors.
