Choosing The Right Needle for Your Cross Stitch Project
Choosing the right needle size is essential for cross-stitching—if the needle is too thick, it will stretch the holes in your fabric; if it's too thin, it will cause the thread to fray as it passes through.
For cross-stitch, you should always use Tapestry Needles, which have a blunt tip and a large eye.
Needle Size by Fabric Count
The general rule of thumb is: The higher the fabric count, the smaller the needle (higher needle size number).
| Fabric Type | Fabric Count (Stitches per inch) | Recommended Needle Size |
| Aida | 8–11 count | Size 22 |
| Aida | 14 count | Size 24 |
| Aida / Evenweave | 16–18 count | Size 26 |
| Hardanger / Linen | 22–28 count | Size 26 or 28 |
| Linen / Fine Silk | 32–40 count | Size 28 |
Quick Pro-Tips
-
The "Fall-Through" Test: If you hold your fabric vertically, the needle should be able to slide through the hole easily but not fall out on its own if you give the fabric a tiny wiggle.
-
Protecting Your Floss: If you notice your embroidery floss is "shredding" or looking fuzzy near the eye of the needle, your needle might be too small for the fabric count, causing unnecessary friction.
-
Size 24 vs. 26: Size 24 is the "workhorse" of the cross-stitch world. If you are starting a project on 14-count Aida and aren't sure what to grab, a Size 24 is almost always the correct choice.
